Blended private-public financing now defines European defense-tech deals.

Neuraspace Secures €15.6M to Build Sovereign European Space Intelligence

Neuraspace raised €15.6 million on a specific bet: Europe needs sovereign Space Domain Awareness independent of US providers. Tech.eu reports the Portuguese startup layered private capital on public funding from Portugal's Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP).

The round

Three domestic funds co-invested: Lince Capital, Explorer Investments, and Armilar Venture Partners. Neuraspace did not disclose the private-public split. Founded in 2020 by Chiara Manfletti, the company now targets the conversion of pilot deployments into multi-year defense contracts. Manfletti framed the raise as the start of Europe's next phase of sovereign SDA capability, which is procurement language — it signals to defense ministries that Neuraspace sits inside EU industrial policy, not adjacent to it.

Reported allocation: AI platform development, autonomous mission operations expansion, and proprietary optical sensing infrastructure. €15.6M funds platform iteration and early sensor rollout. It does not fund a constellation, a launch campaign, or a global ground network. Maintaining the sensor buildout cadence will require additional capital inside the typical 18-24 month venture window.

Capital structure logic runs from sovereign RRP tranches to how undergraduates map their own funding paths. The deal terms tell the real story.

The wedge

The product combines commercial sensor feeds, sovereign sensor data, and high-precision orbit determination into a single AI layer. Output is operational: conjunction warnings, cyber threat flags, RF interference detection, and autonomous decision support. NeuraspaceDEF is the dual-use offering for government and defense buyers.

The dual-use structure solves a capital problem. Defense procurement in Europe moves slowly but pays reliably. For a startup whose unit economics depend on optical-sensor CapEx, one anchor defense contract underwrites the commercial sales motion without further equity dilution. Sovereign positioning also sidesteps ITAR exposure that constrains US-anchored competitors on EU defense bids.

The wedge addresses an expanding operational load. Satellite operators are now contending with rising collision risks, cyberattacks, GNSS spoofing and jamming, RF interference, and increasingly sophisticated counterspace activities. Neuraspace's platform converts that monitoring workload into automated decision support rather than manual operator analysis. Per Manfletti, the mission has already shifted from making space safer to helping operators respond to both accidental and intentional threats — the line between safety and security is narrowing, and Neuraspace is selling to both sides.

Verdict and watchlist

Viable, conditional on contract conversion. The thesis is structurally sound: sovereign SDA is a buyer category, not a feature checkbox. Execution depends on Neuraspace converting RRP-backed pilot deployments into at least one multi-year defense contract inside 12 months. Pass that bar and the next round self-funds.

Two signals will confirm or kill the thesis: an announced anchor defense contract with disclosed term and value, and any RRP disbursement recalibration. EU recovery funds follow political calendars, not startup runways. Until both clear, treat the round as a measured bet, not a thesis confirmed.
